A famous incident connected with his name took place near the village of Neeb Karori in Uttar Pradesh. According to widely repeated accounts, Baba was travelling by train without a ticket. When the ticket examiner asked him to get down, he quietly stepped off at the small station near Neeb Karori.
Soon after the train tried to leave, it could not move despite repeated efforts by the railway staff. Local villagers requested the saint to return to the train. Baba agreed on the condition that a railway halt be maintained for the villagers' convenience. After he boarded again, the train started moving normally.
Whether viewed as a miracle, a symbolic story, or a powerful expression of local faith, this incident became deeply associated with him. People began referring to him as Neem Karoli Baba, after the nearby village.
In the 1960s and early 1970s, many Indian and foreign seekers visited him. Among the most well-known was Ram Dass (Richard Alpert), whose book Be Here Now introduced Neem Karoli Baba's teachings to a global audience.
